Wigan Athletic 1 v 1 Watford
23rd September 2006
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!
Bernard Ramsdale.
Well ADMIN, you missed absolutely nothing, in fact all Latics had to offer this afternoon was a steaming pile of shite.
A defence that couldn't clear the ball, a midfield that went awol for most of the game and an attack that was the most ineffective you're likely to see at this level, incapable of beating an offside trap.
Yes, the referee nailed his colours to the mast after the first five minutes and the linesman in front of the East Stand in the first period looked as though he was on commission for sticking his flag up, but the bare fact of the matter is we were awful. Completely awful.
We're playing against a team whose average height must have been similar to the Harlem Globetrotters and yet we're content the most part to hoof the ball up as high as possible.
If Heskey spent as much time using the ball effectively as he does arguing with the ref or sat on his arse we'd have a world beater. Why Jewell was so loathed to bring a sub on up front when Heskey was a waste of space and Camara had wasted two good chances in the first half is any one's guess. Maybe he's trying to justify shelling out the money he has on someone who had little effect ona side being relegated from the Premiership last season?
That said, the supply line to the forwards was dreadful, we're clearly missing the attacking surges Chimbonda made last season, Boyce and Hall are probably decent defenders in the Championship but at this level they appear to be cloggers who are happy to hoof the ball clear rather than play it out, which is meat and drink to big sides like Watford.
Sorry to say, but that performance today had relegation battle written all over it, there are only so many times you can use the excuse "it's taking them time to gel" before it looks extremely shallow.
And if Whelan thinks the Wigan public are going to flock in their droves for £35 a chuck for Cat A games on the strength of that, I'll have a pint of what he's been on.
Andy Werrill.
